A Complimentary PEDAL & PORT Resource
The Cycling Holiday Playbook is a practical guide for cyclists choosing their next adventure. Understand difficulty, bikes, costs and the questions worth asking before you book.
32 pages · 22 chapters · 3 PEDAL & PORT planning tools
Nearly every cyclist thinking about a first holiday abroad asks me the same handful of things.
How fit do I really need to be? Is sixty kilometres a lot, or not much at all? Should I ride an e-bike, and will that feel like cheating? Do I bring my own bicycle or rent one there? Guided or self-guided? And how do I compare two trips whose prices are nowhere near each other?
They are good questions. They are also difficult to answer from a brochure, because a brochure is written to sell a departure, not to help you decide.
So I wrote the answers down. The Cycling Holiday Playbook is the conversation I would have with you before you book anything — the same questions, in the same order, with the tools I use myself when comparing one trip against another.
Explorer, Enthusiast, Challenger, Social Rider, Comfort Seeker or Independent — decide what you want the days to feel like before deciding where to go.
Distance, elevation, gradient, surface and consecutive days together — not a single kilometre figure — tell you how a riding day will actually feel.
Regular bike or e-bike, bring your own or rent on arrival. The honest considerations behind each choice, without the usual opinions.
Guided, self-guided and supported holidays compared: what is included, what is not, and which suits the way you like to travel.
Compare what is included between very different trips so the cheapest headline price is not mistaken for the best value.
Twenty questions worth asking, plus the red flags that are easy to miss when a trip already looks beautiful.
Use them together: read the difficulty honestly, define what fits you, then score the trip against it.
A distance number alone cannot tell you how a cycling day will feel. The Difficulty Check reads distance, elevation, gradient, surface and consecutive days together — then adds weather, wind, bike, pace and recovery.
Can I comfortably ride this distance with this climbing, on this terrain, repeatedly, while still enjoying my vacation?
Your personal benchmark: comfortable daily distance, comfortable climbing, preferred surface, consecutive riding days, regular bike or e-bike, guided or self-guided, and an approximate total budget.
What actually fits the way I want to ride?
Score any trip you are considering against your Ride Profile — destination, fitness, distance, elevation, surface, bike options, support and value — so two very different itineraries can finally be compared side by side.
Would I still choose this trip if nobody saw my Strava?
You do not need to read it front to back. Use it as a planning companion whenever a question comes up.

Read the Playbook, then let’s talk. Destinations, riding levels, fitness, e-bikes, group travel — a conversation is often faster than another evening of research.
